Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
For our newspaper we were specifically creating a local newspaper, trying to produce and in some ways replicate our local newspaper. As a result these papers are neither stereotypical broadsheet nor tabloid papers. Although I researched into national newspapers to gather a wider range of layout techniques that could engage the readers as they target a wider audience therefore having to introduce different techniques of persuasion. For instance, The Guardian has to appeal to a mass audience therefore we took techniques that they use for their newspaper and website and tried to mirror these qualities.
A local newspaper primarily includes local news, so much so that to a certain extent a person who would read it not from that particular area will not understand some of the articles included. In contrast, tabloid newspapers such as The Times or The Guardian report on stories from all of the UK which will more than likely be seen on the news. Therefore I felt that it was necessary to introduce a balance between the two and create a ‘new’ approach by adding some stories from the national news but still having the main focus on local news. As a result all of our stories were in fact true and were based upon the main headlines in our area at the current moment in time. Therefore as a result I think this improved our newspaper as our content was more interesting and appealed to the audience by showing a range between the two forms of articles that being, local and national.
As other successful newspapers do, we made sure that our newspaper was recognisable throughout our newspaper, website and poster. Therefore we used the same fonts, colour schemes, and titles throughout, showing the reader some familiarity and being able to distinguish the creator. For instance on all three ancillary tasks our masthead, ‘News Weekly’ was easily identifiable with it being in the same font and colour on all three pieces.
As a result I think our newspaper looks realistic and I think that we have taken different aspects from local and national papers to create a happy medium. Therefore we used selling points that would not usually be seen on a local paper. For instance on the right of our paper, we introduced a column that told the reader what would be included in the today’s paper, in my opinion this breaks the cover up and although takes some attention off the stories; creates more on the paper itself by showing more articles that the reader may be interested in. I think this is successful as it shows the balance between the two, on the other hand we have included advertisements that again break up the text and space, and show the reader it is a local newspaper with the advertising of local companies and events.
Similarly we included these techniques with our website, although we feel this is our weakest part of our project. Critically we believe that the quality doesn’t match with the quality of our other tasks and is a very basic website in comparison to the websites we researched. Although we felt we tried to create the same style within ours we believe that if we had more of an understanding on the programme we used, it could definitely of been made better and to a higher standard. Although we did incorporate our stories and headlines from our paper and linked it with the website as this was the daily news for ‘News Weekly’. Also adding in our advertisements this coincided with our research on the websites and how The News Guardian includes adverts to further the interest to local businesses. Personally I think the advertisements detract attention away from the main aim of the stories, and therefore feel they are a waste of space. Although as this already works with local newspaper we k new we had to still use them.

The poster is a strong point of our overall project as, in my opinion, it is very detailed. It is different to any other posters people have seen and although we created it due  to our research, I feel it looks better than some posters which already exist for newspapers, and are definitely better than the headline poster boards that try to advertise the paper headlines. As we didn’t have much to compare our poster with we feel that it is a unique design and although can be seen as a cliché with the slogan of the poster, I believe that it links well with the base of our newspaper as we are located on the coast. As this differs from the simplistic approach of other posters that focus on the paper headline, more so than it does on the poster and newspaper. This is why we decided against this style, as we feel this advertises the newspaper the best way and is a lot more detailed to catch the eye of the audience. We believe that our poster therefore engages the audience more as with the slogan and image it makes the reader think of the meaning behind these giving their own personal opinion on our newspaper.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
When implementing my project we tried to use a consistent colour scheme throughout all of our products. This worked well as it makes the products recognisable and showed the reader familiarity within our pieces of production. The use of blue, red and white was used as a result from the survey showed this to be the best option as it would engage the reader more as it was what most of them were looking for in local newspapers. As a result the blue also links with the location of our local newspaper, as this can be seen to mean the blue of the sea, relevant to Whitley Bay. The red therefore contrasts with the blue and therefore emphasises and highlights some areas of our work. Throughout we stuck with the same font of Georgia, and used the same titles and included them on all of our ancillary tasks. If I was to redo this project I would introduce a logo to our project that could be included on all of tasks to be more identifiable to the reader of the newspaper itself. Therefore our ancillary tasks are well linked between one another and with this combination from the website and poster, produce an effective approach to advertising our main task of the newspaper.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Predominantly expressing positive feelings and comments about our products, when asked to look at the products and compare them against other local newspapers and their products. On the whole, we received positive responses regarding our tasks and although the website was identified as our weakness in our project they felt that our newspaper and poster compensated for this as the majority of responses praised the originality of our poster and overall look of our front cover. Also the amount of detail we had taken into consideration didn’t come unnoticed, for instance our columns aligned with each other on both the front cover and the second page.
They seemed most interested by the introduction of national news, and although the subject matters of some of the articles wouldn’t necessarily focus on them as a target audience (as we asked classmates) they could see how the stories could be popular amongst other readers; therefore appealing to a mass audience.
Seemingly, a general categorisation of our newspaper has been made and our feedback was overall, surprisingly positive. Although we know there could be major improvements, we feel that for the website this was hindered through the programme we used.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Predominantly using Microsoft Publisher, we created the plans and drafts for most of our tasks, later going on to make the final products. For instance our newspaper plans and final piece were created in Publisher. We were most definitely comfortable using this programme, as we have a lot of experience using this programme from an early age. We found it easy to manipulate the images, as well as using the range of text tools, for example creating columns in the text boxes. This is clearly a crucial point to the creation of a successful newspaper.
To research I used other local products where possible, as my goal was to create a local newspaper, a poster advertising it and a website coinciding with the paper. Therefore with the need to manipulate images for the poster we used Macromedia Fireworks, again comfortable with this programme and the editing of images and texts. For instance when making our paper boat we were able to cut out the background of the image to overlap it on the image of Whitley Bay lighthouse. The biggest task we faced was the website and using Microsoft Expression, this programme was new to us and we didn’t have the knowledge to take advantage of what was clearly a great programme. But with little knowledge we did the best we could and created a website that in my opinion lacked flare like our other pieces. With the previous research I think that this benefitted our work as we had preconceptions of what we needed to produce and although I am disappointed with our website I feel it still could be used as a local newspaper website as they are very basic when looking at our research.

When planning, we used ideas that we had found to be successful during researching different aspects of the tasks. We kept the target audience similar to that of the usual local newspapers and continued to orientate it towards this group. Although adding subjects that could be read by people of our age, with the introduction of the school story and the university fees article. We used this feature to enhance the range of audience trying to appeal to a wide range of people with the differentiation of stories. In doing so I think we have been successful and have allowed the current news, local and national, to be produced into one paper.

Poster Production

For the production of our poster we decided to create a similar style to the ones that we have researched. We create a design similar to the one with the folded newspaper into the shape of an aeroplane. Therefore we linked this with our theme and our local base, being at the coast we were able to come up with the idea of a boat and then add it on to an image of the local lighthouse. As a result we had to come up with a slogan that would also link with our theme but fit with the genre of a newspaper. Also including a sell line to enhance the newspapers selling technique into persuading the reader to buy and also tell them what this paper is advertising. We included this in the same font and colour as it is on our newspaper to again engage the reader and show them the similar characteristic.

Draft

To create this I 'youtubed' a video clip as a how to on folding the paper into a boat. Therefore we created the boat and photographed it, editing the image and overlapping it onto our own image of Whitley Bay lighthouse. Therefore it gave the ilusion of a paper boat sailing by the lighthouse. Also we came up with a slogan to try and engage the reader and create reader participation with them having to think about the meaning behind the slogan, developing an understanding with them. 'Lifes not always as peaceful as the beach' we created this as it linked with our location and therefore as it is a local newspaper the reader can relate, although we feel the hidden message behind this is that the stories involved have a wider audience and hit some well documented subjects that are in ways dramatic amongst the audiences, for instance the rise in university fees. Also this could be seen as a form of synergy as it portrays the advertising of two ideas, for instance could therefore link with the recycling of the newspaper and how it is reuseable and therefore advises the audience to do so.

Bellow is the screen shot of our poster and the programme we created it in.

Images- We took images of Whitley Bay Lighthouse and our folded newspaper to link the two and create an advert similar to our draft.

Slogan- this was created from a website that has an option of many fonts therefore we had a wide selection and chose these styles to persuade the reader and draw their attention.

Website Production

When creating the website pages we used a similar layout to the News Guardians site, as we liked the layout of it when researching, also as it is a local paper we could relate and include similar headlines and links. Although we set out our headlines different to this as we chose a different approach with our stories and headlines. Also we decided to include a column down the right of our page that stays the same on all of our pages, which includes the weather for the day, adverts and also 'tell us your story' where the reader can contact the newspaper. We didnt come up with the second page of the newspaper plans as it will be similar to the main page but with our main article, Sainsbury's, including the full article and the including links to other pages. Therefore we thought the plans for this would be irrelevant and time wasting when making the website as it was very time consuming.

Draft

This final design differs from our draft as when we began ceating it, we found difficulties with the programme we used, Microsoft Expression Web 2. It was difficult for me personally as it was hard to rearrange the layout and design of our newspaper. Also when inserting images the rescaling or manouvering of them was difficult to do and was time consuming. Although the final product looks good, it took a lot of effort making it, and i feel it could of been made better if we used another programme. Bellow is the screen shot from when we created the website, and how we had to insert the images and texts speciffically into different boxes that had to be altered after most edits.

Final Design

We used the same colourscheme (blues and reds) to link with our newspaper, therefore it would all link together and would show familliarity to the reader as it would be very similar. Although we changed the style from columns to just leaving it in a website 'blogger' form, allowing differentiation between the two. We kept the layout all very simple and the design of it all was sectioned with boxes to show the reader the different headlines and briefs. Also we used the same masthead but made it a smaller size font as it wasnt our main focus on the website, and from our research other newspapers have done the same.

Newspaper Production

Firstly, we made a draft in Microsoft Publisher to gather an understanding on how to produce our final newspaper. We added in what we thought we would include, for instance secondary images, headlines and the layout of the paper. We produced this design draft to allow us to refer back to this and also add in our own articles and images.

Draft

The images bellow show the progression we made when creating my newspaper pages. We had to look at the coventions of papers (either the front cover or the inside page) and edit around our articles to make them fit with our layout. On the front cover, we used the same mast head as the ones we researched as it would show familiarity to the audiences. We also decided to add an original feature that we created ourselves this would link other headlines with the inside of the paper, shown with our column on the right of the front over. We used the traditional layout techniques of columns and alligned all of the articles with the columns to be similar to that of original newspapers. Also from our research we were able to see how many articles and adverts to use on the front cover and second page. Therefore we decided to use five articles as the length of the articles filled the space greatly and we were just able to fit everything in. For these articles we chosen a few images to go with the articles as too many would make it look over crowded, therefore we needed to find a balance. As a result we only added images to the main articles as it emphasises the main topics in our newspaper, attracting the reader mainly to these articles. Also considering the colourscheme of our newspaper, we kept it simple and only added colours of blues and reds to emphasise main characteristics. Although our images and advertisements coincidently linked with our colourscheme aswell. For the second page we again kept the traditional layout to engage the reader through the familiarity of real newspapers and now our own. We concluded that we would have a main article on this page linked with our front cover, and have two more shot stories surrounding this. These articles were all relevant to the time period of our production of our newspaper therefore it made our newspaper more realistic to others.

Planning-Images

For all of our tasks, we used our own images. We decided to take images that obviously linked with our stories but this also swayed our choices in the articles as the images to go with them were easy to take. For instance our local Sainsbury's store for our main article, and for our poster Whitley Bay lighthouse. Even for our advertisements we used original adverts that we were able to recieve permission from as we both knew the owners. Although for some we created our own with images we had taken to come up original adverts.

Planning-Articles

We immediately identified the range of stories our audience would like to see in our newspaper by the results from our survey. Therefore we were aware that we obviously needed to include local news. Although we felt that it was necessary to include national stories as it would aim for wider audience as a result, therefore differentiating our newspaper from other well established newspapers. Trying to show a similar topic range, we produced stories that related to news relevant to the news at present. As a result we researched into current news and came up with stories that would appeal to most readers as they are main headline news. We came up with different ideas (shown in the plans) but came up with the final ideas as the current news in our area changed our plans on many of the articles providing us with accessible information to the produce the articles. We therefore came up with the idea of three local stories and two national:
Local
Sainsbury’s-
·         The refurbishment of the local store, offering a wider range of products.
·         Will show the changes being made and how it will affect the local community.
Metro-
·         Development plans that are looking to be put into place in the future.
·         Will state the plans and explain about past and present plans.
School-
·         Current weather conditions causing the closure of our school, creating much talk on the new school.
·         Argue the fact it is a new building and discuss the problems.
National
University fees-
·         With the current rise in university fees, showing the public’s disagreements with the many protests going on around the country.
·         Will discuss the rise and the countries protests against it.
Tax bands-
·         Shows in some areas of the country a misunderstanding in which band you are in.
·         Therefore shows an alternative to which you can check to see if your house has been placed in the right house band.

Once we came up with the final stories, we decided on how we would produce them. We found the best way to do so and manage our times to finish our other tasks was to split up the articles by each producing two articles and writing one together. Therefore it shows we both have had input into this project and shows that we both shown our own skills to research and write our own articles. Adding our own individual characteristics to the newspaper. As a result we decided that we would both write a local and national story therefore having to do two different types of research. My two articles were the development plans for the metros and the much debated topic of the increase in university fees. Therefore my partner was writing the articles on our school and the housing tax bands. Resulting in us co-writing the article on our local Sainsbury’s undergoing refurbishment.

For my first story I looked at the writing of the local transport in the area, doing many research on the internet I found the developing plans for my areas local metro network. Therefore I was able to write about these plans and shown a non bias opinion to these. This article shows the plans for the future and whether or not they are likely to be completed. This article will be featured on the second page of our newspaper as one of our short stories.
Article- Development plans for the Metro system in Tyne & Wear:
Time for change?
With the newly modernised and updated stations along the metro routes, there are many more plans set to be completed. The plans are being split up into phases; the first and second phase have secured many investors and private developers, the proposed developments of the ‘all change programme’ is set to refurbish 90 metro stations and modernize 45 more, with structures such as bridges, tunnels and overhead power lines being looked at for repair and maintenance. Additional plans to meet other goals, for instance new park and ride facilities, doubling of lines and the rebuilding of stations, this being the second phase and is expected to cost £255.3 million, with this development already on its way to completion.
More plans are being added to list of ‘to dos’, and with the introduction of a third phase they are looking to secure funding for this. This will enable them to add a new fleet of metro car trains, a new signaling system and a new generation of ticket machines with more overhaul and maintenance of structures, track and overhead lines, and further station improvement that will be required. The reason why they are lacking this funding is due to the fact that the metro fleet will be almost 40 years old when replacement begins, even though from the original design the fleet had an expectancy of 30 years. Therefore due to the lack of funding plans are scheduled to start in 2019.
Although there has been suggested extensions and improvements in previous years that haven’t yet undergone any changes. For instance, in 2002, Nexus unveiled an expansion plan to extend the metro system by adding new sections using ‘street running’. This would provide a cost effective alternative to current metro services through areas that it doesn’t reach, using a high-end tram system. This plan listed a number of routes from; Tyne dock to east Bolden, Blyth and Ashington, Killingworth and Cramlington, to an entirely new track involving tunneling and bridging in the west end of Newcastle.

These plans would benefit the metro services greatly as these lines have the highest potential ridership, due to the struggle in gaining funding for this project and for the improvement of the existing system, these plans are highly unlikely to ever begin construction and if they were to be started will be in the long term. As a result the main aim and funding of public transport is geared towards the bus system instead of metros. With this in mind, many plans will not undergo development and the metro needs further backing from investors to complete these plans for improvement to make passengers journeys safer and easier.
As i had completed my local article i then began to research information for my second article, university fees. As it has recently been on the news it was easy to find many articles relevant to my piece. Taking into consideration many peoples views on this topic i was able to create an article that shown relevance and opinion with this much debated subject. This article will be used on our front cover of the newspaper and as a result will be one of the main focul points on our page.
Article- Rise in University fees across the country:
Students face rise in tuition fees
Students will be forced to pay thousands more for their university education under proposals to raise the tuition fees. It has been reported that the student funding calls for universities to be left to decide what to
charge.
A highly controversial option for the Government and in particular the explosive exposure for the Liberal Democrats, who campaigned against tuition fees during the General Election. Their favoured option of a graduate tax was ruled out by ministers as many classed it as unmanageable. An obvious radical change needs to be made to the funding system, with graduates paying a higher rate of interest on loans, more places being made available and universities effectively competing for students.
As a result many believe there shouldn't be a fixed price for higher education because all universities are different and provide a range of courses. Now pressure will be forced upon the university as they have to persuade the students that these charges for their choice of course represent the value for money. Therefore proving or having to improve their standards of teaching and that these admission costs are fair, as well as contributing more to supporting the students through different policies.
Under these plans, universities can start to vary what they charge but it will be up to students whether they choose the university. The money will follow the student who will follow the quality. The student is no longer taken for granted, the student is in charge. Although a well awaited backlash over the increase in fees, became apparent through the many protests throughout the country by students. Forcing the decision that the criticisms of their recent promotion of this plan are in fact correct and that this idea would not be best pursued.

Together we began to write the article on our local Sainsbury's, as it was under current construction. For this we decided to recieve inside information from this project and set up an interview with one of their managers. Therefore we got taken through all their plans for the project and got to ask them questions that would help us write the article.

A result of finding out this information, we were therefore able to include key information into the article that was in fact true and not made up. Although we needed to keep the information relevant to the article, but i believe that we did so and linked everything with the aim of the article; updating the reader on recent plans, and the opening date of the 'new' Sainsbury's. Therefore this would also be an article that could be expected to be found in our local paper as it is a well talked about topic in our area. We felt that this interview was a success and we found out everything we needed to be included into our article, as a result this was made our main story featuring on the second page with a link from the front cover of our paper. Therefore we have included our own images to this article taken on the day of the interview to show where abouts on the project they are up to.

Article- Current refurbishment to the local Sainsbury's:
Sainsbury's: Set for Impovement
Sainsbury’s has undergone major construction in past months, remodelling the entire shop and extending on the original building. Due to the competition from other big supermarket chains nearby, Sainsbury’s felt that in this area they needed to increase their market share as it has the opportunity to receive a lot more business due to the fact they are situated in a catchment area. Their aim is to introduce non food products to the store for instance, clothing, entertainment, electrical, home ware etc. They believe that the sales potential from these new areas of retail could provide a greater profit.
To mirror the success to that of the Durham and Washington stores, they feel this well awaited 2 year extension plan will follow suit. Ensuring that the in store prices will stay the same therefore not reimbursing the building costs of the project. Increasing the store space an extra 10,000 square foot with the introduction of a mezanine floor added for even more space. Primarily seizing the opportunity within the area, aiming to boost profits of the store within the new areas of the store. With the inclusion of non food products they believe this will receive more interest from customers, made apparent from other local store figures.
But is this 10 million pound investment worth it? Many customers in the area like the familiarity of the store and although it is being updated, would like it to be kept the same. As it does not include the product ranges of clothing, electrical etc, it doesn’t tempt the consumer into buying other products and therefore allows the customer to get what they need and that’s it. Although this is obviously seen as strength to Sainsbury’s as it encourages them to buy more products with the new range being available.
Updating the image of Sainsbury’s is an extensive task, priding themselves on the quality of the company and their products they knew that this refit had to be done. Although reducing the car parking by 96 spaces was a big ask, as it caused disruption trying to relay the new spaces, the weather did not help with this phase. Keen to build a new image to the store the petrol station also undergone refurbishment, although cutting back on products in there, as they feel that there was an insufficient profit from the amount of items stocked. Much debated topic surrounding credit card machines and whether or not their will be the installment of ‘pay at the pump’, but we can confirm that there will be no credit card stalls at the petrol pumps as in their opinion it keeps the personal, friendly atmosphere.
Sainsbury’s is due for completion on the 23rd February, with a weeks closing from the 16th February. This ensures that they can complete the internal moves as the entire layout of the store is changing, and therefore would be unachievable if the store was open.

Aswell as this we had the inlcusion of two more stories, written by the person i worked with. These were again one local story on our school and a national story about the house tax bands. Bellow are the aticles she had written, again short stories.

Article- The closure of Monkseaton High School due to extreme weather conditions.
£21 million down the drain !
On Sunday 28th November at approximately 3am, Monkseaton High School head teacher Dr Kelley was alerted by North Tyneside Council security that there was a problem in the building. Many members of staff were called into the school to find out that 3 of the 100 roof panels had been leaking leaving many areas of the school damaged by the amount of the water that had got in. Later on that day the architects come to assess the damage and put a time scale on how long the repair would take.
Due to the severe weather conditions earlier during that week it therefore put a hold on the repairs, as it wasn't safe for people to work on the roof. With the repairs on hold, it meant that Monkseaton High School would be closed for the week to all students and many members of stuffs.
Still after the week off, the roof has only got temporary replacement panels on. The permanent solution will be put in place during the Christmas break and assessed at the same time. This decision has been put in place for the student benefits meaning that there would be not more education loss due to the damage. Monkseaton High School feel that it is worth  noting that the work that has been done due to the damage has not cost anything to the school or council.
This story was a last minute inclusion and we decided to change to this option as it would be a story that many people would read due to the major talk in the area on this topic of the new build. Costing around £21 million, this was therefore a shock to here the news that the roof panels had collasped, causing major disuption with the closure of the school.

Article- The confusion of different tax bands awarded to similar houses.
What's Your Band?
'Many properties have been placed within the wrong council tax band. Council bands were based on what homes were sold for on a set date: properties within England were set on the 1st April 1991 and the 1st April 2003 for properties in Wales. Property owner’s can have the home tax band reviewed and could end up having a reduction and a refund on any difference due. There been a snapshot survey held by consumer champion website, finding that one out of seven properties, selected at random was placed in the wrong band, making a high per cent of 14 per cent of properties could have been placed in the wrong council tax band since the early 1990’s. Refunds on properties have been running into several thousand pounds and still more to come. You can check your council tax band on voa.gov.uk and find more information about inquiring about getting your tax band reviewed. Beware of getting your property reviewed as it cannot just lower your the band but could make it higher or just leave it unchanged. For more information telephone 0844 2380162.
Although in these articles we dont show anecdotes from local residents, this is often the main basis of the articles. Therefore we worked around this and used our research as the opion from local residents to try and include differences and reason behind the stories. Although with some of our stories we felt it was unneccessary to include them, as they would be irrelevant.
Aswell as this we decided to include an advertisment that would link with our article writing, as it engages the reader to write in and 'Tell us their story'. With the newspaper being based locally, it extends readers paticipation by them being able to provide us with their own stories and we being able to write about them, therefore being realistic. We felt this was a good inclusion to the paper as it gave another aspect that we believe is unique.

As we created a local newspaper, on the news and events in our area. We decided to use current stories that had truth behind them, therefore the research to write them was easy to find and annotate. As well as this we felt that having the interview at Sainsbury's was good with writing the article as we got the answers to the all the points we needed to create the story. Overall i think the stories were a success and are suitable for an actuall newspaper as the sarticles could show genuine readers interest because of their subject matters.

Planning-Poster

Our poster will resemble the design in the bottom left of our design sheet. We chose this as it links with the research with our newspaper posters, but gives our individual local outlook with the boat and the area we will use, Whitley Bay. We decided to go with the posters that advertise the newspaper rather than the story as we feel they clearly look the best but also ensure the paper with publicity. This is identified with the sell lines by the papers using slogans to engage the reader, making them think about the slogan and the link with the surroundings of image and text. As a result we chose to use a local landmark that would therefore receive instant recognition and again engage the reader. We chose to create a paper boat as it links with the research of the ‘Shropshire Star’ poster. Also we will be creating a sell line that will link with the surroundings in the local area but also be ‘catchy’ and link with the paper. Therefore to create this poster, we will print out our own newspaper and fold to create the boat shape, photograph and transfer to our own image of the lighthouse.

Planning-Website

Again we created design ideas for our newspaper website, therefore linking with our research we began to include key characteristics that were included in all of the three websites that I researched. For instance, from my research from ‘The Times’ I felt that their design was well suited to my aims, as they emphasised their stories more by using limited images. Although I feel that we shouldn’t use as much text as this automatically puts some readers off from reading them. Therefore opting for brief statements about the articles linking the pages to these articles, this then gives the reader insight into the article. Therefore with this inclusion we rearranged to see which would suit our newspaper the best, deciding on layout two as we felt offered the most information and as it emphasises more on the articles for the paper, relying less on the images. This worked with the style of ‘The Times’ and also will transfer the same colour scheme from our newspaper. Also using the same stories from our paper.

Planning-Newspaper

For our newspaper, we firstly created a page for notes giving us a rough idea of what they should include, bullet pointing out our plans. We therefore were able to link our findings from our research to our own newspaper and show a clear link to actual products making our work realistic.

We created four hand drawn designs for potential covers for the newspaper, as they were quick and easy to produce showing a clear understanding. We chose to expand on our 3rd design idea and began creating a computer version of this, showing a rough replica design of what it will eventually look like.
We decided to come up with our own layout, although we took characteristics from our research, using the same font ‘Times New Roman’ and taking into consideration the amount of adverts being used on the covers and second pages. Although all of these newspapers used the same colour schemes, we were therefore able to take our results from our survey and link them with these papers that allowed us to opt for the blues and reds used. Predominantly having one main image, we knew we had to include at least one to the front cover as this draws the attention of the reader more so than the headlines, but also links it with the story to make them more interesting, as the reader can see familiarity and is more connected with the stories.

For page two, we knew we had to have a main story that linked with the front cover. Therefore we planned out the page focusing on this story with smaller stories and advertisements surrounding it, emphasising this story.  For this we chose design 1 that we felt showed the best layout for out page, as it included all aspects that we needed. We didn’t research much into this as we felt that we didn’t need to take much inspiration from original texts as we would create a second page that would link with our front cover giving it an authentic feel. It will typically be similar to that of original pieces as there is never much difference between newspaper pages.

Planning

To gather ideas and to create our own designs we used the research and began planning for our newspaper, website and poster. Therefore we created hand drawn designs as a rough guide throughout the making of these 3 ancillary tasks. For all of these tasks we listed what we would like to include and then came up with design plans, four for each. With this we had to take into consideration the layout, images, text and colour scheme. We then expanded on one idea and used Microsoft publisher to expand on this idea. This was the basis in which we would create our final design, although we used Microsoft Expression Web to create the final website as it was the programme most suitable for this task.

With the newspaper we had to create our own stories, with it being a local newspaper we took inspiration from recent news and events in the area. We created 5 stories, with one main story that would feature on the second page, this story is a local story that has produced a lot of publicity throughout recent months with its extensive change, ‘Sainsbury’s: Set for Improvement’. Also we began writing four other stories, two of which being again local stories, one with the inclusion of our school which provided us with enough information to create an article and the second with the local metro and their plans. Although we felt that the next articles shouldn’t be local and should include national news, therefore this would attract readers as they would be subjects that they would want to read as they would be major headline news and beneficial to most people. These articles were based upon the recent rise in University fees and the tax bands with houses.
Adverts also had to be created to ensure our newspaper was realistic and based upon the fact that most local newspapers rely on their revenue from advertising and not the sale of the paper itself. Therefore we had to create our own adverts and also used original adverts from businesses we knew, permission from these businesses therefore allowed us to use them.
We made thorough planning, and shared out the work load between the two of us working together on the main tasks. We worked individually on creating the stories and therefore were able to use our time wisely on the main tasks with both of us having input on these. Therefore we were able to share our ideas and agree or disagree on changes to our tasks.
